Dark Stew

This is where the games and development logs go! :D

Dark Stew

Postby OhSqueezy » Sun May 26, 2013 6:46 pm

Hi everyone! Sorry to be late, but I had to move apartments this week. I am declaring today as my start date!

My game is about fishing creatures from black pools built into marble. The pools are opened by a hand when it touches your heart, filling it with variously sized aquatic things. Your goal is to rapidly fish out a heavy haul of them within the time limit.

The game is loosely based on fishing in Harvest Moon. I'm hoping to create a similar experience of walking around, fishing from different places, and reeling with one button.

I'd like to make an anatomically feasible avatar, but I may make a tiny one instead or just a pillar. Here are some sketches of the character and the pools.

Today I mostly struggled with technical stuff. I was drawing too many water layers without doing anything to lighten the CPU's load. I tried a few new approaches and decided for the sake of saving time to stop hacking around in Pygame and pre-render the pools with Imagemagick.

Here's what the water probably will look like in the game:

I'm behind schedule but making progress :)

In a few hours, seven days are up, and I didn't animate the main character yet! I'm going to keep going and post a demo when there is fun interaction in the game.

The way somebody looked at me in the park tonight made me want to change the game's name to Dark Stew.

This name is actually what drew me to your thread.

The game sounds amazing! I can't wait to try it. I hope you'll continue to make it even though 7 days are up.

Hey awesome! I'm devoting a few more days to it and hopefully it'll be playable by then.

Re: Mane Dravele

I'd like to submit this before the end of the jam even though you only walk around and sit by the pools in the game. I changed the name again for some reason, this time to Mane Dravele. Part of the reason is the name Black/Dark Stew doesn't add much to the stuff already in the game.

Release

Postby OhSqueezy » Tue Jun 11, 2013 10:14 pm

Here is a new version with fishing. The longer you leave your line in, the better the chances are of getting a creature when you take in the line. There are 15 creatures to catch. This is the final version for a while, not counting minor bugs or adjustments.

Keys
F11 - Fullscreen
Arrows or D-pad - Move
X or A - Sit/Stand
Z or B - Run

Windows | Linux/Source

I still have to make a Windows binary and give credit for the Creative Commons audio samples [EDIT: the audio credits are in the newest README]
